Collada, in theory, supports most of what FBX does. There are tools made by Autodesk to convert FBX files to Collada (DAE) files, which Blender can also import. However, it will destroy and rebuild a lot of data about the mesh, so it's not ideal. Rich Whitehouse's Noesis is a swiss army knife of 3D model formats, and prior to FBX2GLTF, was my go-to tool for cruching FBX models into a fine paste and reconstituting them. I'd say it's a viable alternative, but it also costs money and I ran into some bugs with it. It uses the official SDK to convert FBX into an intermediate format, and then imports that into Blender. There's also the (paid) Better FBX addon for Blender which can import/export FBX in and out of Blender. ConclusionįBX2GLTF is a super useful tool, and I've used it lots of times to save myself from lots of pain and agony that would've ensued trying to fix up the typical FBX import Blender does. If you're exporting out to FBX again, note that because of how Blender's FBX exporter script works, the output won't match the original FBX in terms of scale. The orientation of bones will be a bit different - you can change how Blender imports the bones when loading the GLTF file. Materials will be ported but currently textures will only be assigned if the textures can be found next to the mesh file. Blender displays these in a weird way (next to the mesh instead of with the bones) but they'll export fine (and it makes them easier to remove if you need to). There are some differences between the way Blender imports FBX and GLTF files.įirst, bones that aren't weighted to the mesh will appear as Empty entries, parented to the bone in the armature. It'll place the result into a folder with the name of the FBX file and "out" appended to it. Now you have it! It's a command line tool, but you can drag FBX files onto it to convert them.

From there you can download the Windows version. To download it, you can get a recent version from the Releases section which Fire has provided here. That is a great help when you have to get an FBX file to Blender, and the author of the model forgot to create a binary variant. There is even one tool to perform that from Autodesk, and it is free to use. There are 2 versions of FBX2GLTF available - the original Facebook project, and the one updated by Fire. In that case, you will have to use a tool to convert from ASCII to binary.

We'll get there someday soon!) How to use (.And, for VRC users, export them out to FBX again later, because Unity doesn't read GLTF yet. And, ta-da! You can use it to convert FBX into GLTF and load into Blender!

They created an FBX to GLTF converter that uses the official Autodesk FBX code and exports to fully spec-compliant GLTF. Or is it?įacebook had a similar problem and sought to remedy it. as much as possible! (Blender still has some limitations.) Isn't that great? Well, no, because your files are FBX files, not GLTF files. It follows the specifications that exist for FBX, but not completely (FBX supports lots of weird things - it's 20 years old!) and works mostly.įortunately, there is now an alternative to FBX of sorts - the industry backed, free and open, Khronos Group-developed GLTF! It even has a Blender plugin made by Khronos themselves, designed to conform to the spec. So, Blender's FBX importing and exporting is done using code they've written themselves. Subsequently because of certain conditions in their respective licenses, they are Not Allowed to be used together. Blender is Free and Open Source, and essentially a competitor.

Autodesk make 3DS Max, Maya, and a host of other 3D modelling software that cost thousands of dollars and have been industry standards. This is because FBX is owned by Autodesk.
